Why is the right soil important for autoflowers?
Even if autoflower plants are characterized by simple cultivation, the yield of your harvest and its quality depends, among other things, on the grow soil you choose. So don’t save money at the wrong end by resorting to cheap soil from DIY stores. These often do not have the right pH and EC values, which are important for growing, and do not have enough nutrients. There is also a risk of introducing pests through DIY store soil, which can damage the growth of your plant. You can find the best soil for autoflowers in numerous grow stores. Our Bonsanto soil is also suitable for growing autoflowers. It is self-regulating, so you don’t need to measure the pH and EC value. In general, the advantage of using Bonsanto components is that you don’t need a pH meter, EC meter, temperature or moisture meter. This makes your work much easier when growing the plant. You can find more information about growing in the Bonsanto grow box in our growing instructions.
What should you consider when choosing soil for autoflowers?
When choosing the right soil for autoflowers, you should pay particular attention to components such as airiness, nutrient content, pH value and EC value. However, the use of organic soil is also important for growing an autoflower. You can find out exactly how to grow in one of our grow boxes in the growing instructions on our website.
Loose soil for autoflowers
When looking for a suitable soil for your autoflower, make sure that it is loose and airy. Loose and airy soil means that the roots of your autoflower can grow faster and do not have to laboriously find their way through the soil. The airy soil not only provides the roots with sufficient oxygen, but also allows them to absorb water and nutrients better than when using heavy grow soil. Loose soil can also prevent the risk of rotting roots.
Natural soil for autoflowers
As with any other type of plant, it is of course also important for autoflower varieties that the soil is 100% natural. This means that the harvest can be consumed without any problems and you don’t have to worry about ingesting harmful substances. The premium soil from Bonsanto, for example, is 100% organic and is therefore a suitable soil for your autoflower. The organic soil contains microorganisms that strengthen your plant’s defenses by making nutrients from the soil usable for the roots.
Nutrient-rich soil for autoflowers
A little caution is required with autoflowering varieties when it comes to nutrients. Unlike photoperiod plant varieties, they require fewer nutrients as the vegetative growth phase is relatively short. Over- and under-fertilization should be avoided at all costs! Premium soil from Bonsanto, for example, is ideal for growing autoflowers, as it already contains some nutrients and you can therefore do without additional fertilizer, especially in the first few weeks of cultivation. When choosing soil for autoflowers, make sure that it contains compost and perlite. Compost is an organic substance that accelerates plant growth, while perlite loosens up the soil and thus contributes to improved oxygen uptake by the roots. Perlite also helps the soil to dry and thus improves aeration of the soil. Keep your hands off soil that does not contain perlite, as this will ruin the growth of your autoflower.
Correct PH value of the soil
The pH value indicates how acidic or alkaline your grow soil is. The values 1-6 indicate an acidic growing environment, whereas the values 8-14 stand for an alkaline environment. The number 7 stands for a neutral growing environment. Autoflowering plants like slightly acidic soil, which is why the pH value of your soil should be between 6.0 and 6.5. If you pay attention to the pH value when buying soil for autoflowers, you will save yourself a lot of time as you will no longer have to regulate it yourself. Bonsanto soil is pH self-regulating and is therefore perfect for growing your autoflower. You can find out how to grow in the Bonsanto grow box here. If you are not using self-regulating soil, you should measure the pH value of your soil regularly so that you can intervene if your soil becomes too acidic or alkaline.
Correct EC value of the soil
Autoflowers generally need fewer nutrients than other plant species. It therefore makes sense to regularly measure the EC value of the soil for autoflowers. The EC value indicates how nutritious the soil is. The correct EC value is important for the fast and healthy growth of your plant. A value that is too low indicates under-fertilization, whereas a high EC value indicates over-fertilization. It is best to use soil from a grow store, such as Bonsanto soil, as these already have the optimum EC value and therefore save you a lot of work.
How do you recognize bad soil?
There are a few signs by which you can recognize that a soil is rather unsuitable for growing your autoflower. If the soil is light and not dark brown, it probably has insufficient nutrients and is therefore not suitable for growing. You can also carry out a smell test. If the soil smells unpleasant, this may indicate that the soil is too acidic, in which case you should not use it for your grow. Another indication of bad soil can be determined using your hand. Take a little soil in your hand and form a ball. If the ball sticks together well and does not crumble when lightly squeezed, the soil is too heavy for growing autoflower varieties. Instead, the soil should be airy and fall apart easily when squeezed.
