Why does hemp smell?

Cannabis smells due to a variety of terpenes found in the plant. Terpenes are organic compounds that are responsible for the characteristic scent of many plants and flowers. In hemp plants, these compounds give hemp its unmistakable and unique odor.

Terpenes specific to hemp include myrcene, limonene, pinenes and caryophyllene. Each of these terpenes has its own specific scent and together they contribute to the well-known weed odor.

The smell of hemp varies greatly depending on the strain. This means that depending on which strain you grow, the smell can differ. In addition, the smell of hemp usually becomes more intense when your plant is heated, such as when smoking. This is because the heat causes the terpenes to evaporate, which makes their smell stronger.

Why avoid hemp odor in the home?

There are several reasons why you should avoid the smell of cannabis in your home. Since cannabis has a very strong and distinctive smell, it can easily be noticed and attract unwanted attention from your neighbors. Many find the smell annoying, which is why it is important to ensure that the smell does not spread. For many growers themselves, the smell in their own home is also undesirable, as it can affect the quality of the living space. Too strong a hemp scent can cause headaches, allergies or other complaints.

How to avoid hemp odor in the home?

There are several things you should pay attention to in order to minimize or avoid the smell of hemp during growing, drying and storage.

Indoor Grow

Use an activated carbon filter for indoor growing. Carbon filters are one of the most effective methods of odor control. They filter and neutralize the smell of cannabis before the air escapes from your grow room. If you are growing multiple plants, the Bonsanto Activated Carbon Filter Max could be a good way for you to eliminate the smell of cannabis in your home or grow room. If you need a less powerful filter and value silence, our Bonsanto Silent activated carbon filter may be just the filter for you.

To control cannabis odor, good ventilation is essential. So make sure your grow room is well ventilated and the air circulates regularly. If you are growing in a grow box, you can use a fan to ensure air circulation. If you grow directly in your home, you should ventilate at regular intervals.

To keep the smell of cannabis to a minimum, we would generally recommend using a grow box for indoor growing. This makes it easier to control and minimize the smell. If you are looking for a grow box, take a look at our Bonsanto grow boxes, as these allow you to grow discreetly and odorlessly indoors.

Drying

To minimize the smell of cannabis, you should make sure to dry your hemp properly. Poor drying can lead to a stronger odor and even cause mold.

Storage

A strong cannabis odor can also spread when cannabis is stored. It is therefore important to store cannabis correctly.

We recommend using an airtight container to store cannabis. This prevents the hemp smell from spreading in your home. You should also store your harvest in a cool and dark place because, as already mentioned, the smell of hemp intensifies in heat. So to minimize the smell but maintain the quality of your buds, store them in a cool place. As with growing, you can of course also use an activated charcoal filter for storage. Place this in your storage area to eliminate the smell of cannabis.

If you store your cannabis as explained above, the smell should not actually spread in your home. If you are still worried that your home smells of cannabis, you can also use air fresheners or essential oils, as these can naturally mask the smell of hemp.
